Refractive lens exchange is also known as clear lens extraction and lens replacement surgery.
People in their 40s and 50s begin experiencing changes in their vision and those who never needed glasses or contact lenses before, are now needing them to see both up close and some intermediate distances. This frustration often leads many people to an eye doctor’s office looking for a solution. LASIK may not be the best solution for this type of vision loss as it does not correct reading vision or presbyopia. For this age group, removal of the natural lens inside the eye, with a procedure called Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), can be a better alternative to LASIK and other laser vision correction procedures.
As we begin to age, the lens inside the eye begins to harden and show signs of cataracts. During this procedure, our surgeon removes your eye’s natural lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) that will correct your refractive error, to achieve clear vision at all distances. This lens extraction and replacement is also performed during cataract surgery but can be done before cataract forms, to clear your vision and eliminate the need for cataract surgery later in life. After the natural lens is removed, there are a number of Intraocular Lens (IOL) options that can provide patients with a full range of vision.
