What Is iLink™ Corneal Cross-Linking?

At Coastal Vision Medical Group, we proudly offer iLink™ corneal cross-linking—the only FDA-approved treatment for progressive keratoconus. iLink™ is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that combines ultraviolet (UV) light with specially formulated riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops to strengthen and stabilize the cornea, which has become weakened by keratoconus or corneal ectasia (a condition that can occur after refractive surgery). iLink™ is recognized globally as the gold standard for treating progressive keratoconus.

Insurance Coverage for iLink™:
iLink™ corneal cross-linking is now covered by over 95% of commercial insurance plans in the United States, making this sight-saving treatment more accessible for our patients.

How iLink™ Works:

iLink™ Corneal Cross-Linking?
  • Creating Corneal Cross-Links: The iLink™ procedure strengthens the cornea by creating new molecular bonds, or cross-links, in the collagen fibers.

  • Corneal Stiffening: This stiffening effect slows or halts the progression of keratoconus, helping to preserve vision.

The procedure consists of two key elements:

  1. Riboflavin Eye Drops: Photrexa® and Photrexa® Viscous riboflavin drops are applied to the cornea, soaking it in preparation for the next step.

  2. Ultraviolet (UV) Light: UV light from the KXL® System is applied to the cornea after it has been soaked with riboflavin drops. This combination strengthens the cornea by increasing collagen cross-linking, helping to stabilize the shape of the cornea and prevent further vision loss.
