Today, with the wonderful advances in intraocular lens (IOL) technology, Coastal Vision Medical Group is able to offer a variety of lens technology options to tailor a customized cataract treatment to fit your individual lifestyle.
With advancements in multifocal lens technology, implantation of these lenses after cataract surgery may provide patients with the advantages of reducing or even eliminating dependence on glasses altogether. Read more about the various lens options available at Coastal Vision Medical Group.
A monofocal IOL is an intraocular lens with a fixed focus for one distance.
Your surgeon may select a monofocal IOLs that is for near focus, for mid-distance focus, or for distant focus. Only one of these three can be selected and the focus will not change after surgery.
The Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only FDA-approved IOL that can be adjusted post-operatively to improve uncorrected visual acuity. First, routine cataract surgery is performed, and the Light Adjustable Lens is implanted. Over the next 2-3 weeks after surgery, the Light Delivery Device (LDD) is used to customize the lens based on the patient’s individual lifestyle needs.
In traditional cataract surgery, the surgeon implants a monofocal artificial lens commonly called an intraocular lens or IOL. If you have astigmatism, however, you may still experience blurred and distorted vision because a standard IOL cannot correct corneal astigmatism. The Medicare-approved AcrySof Toric IOL corrects for both cataracts and astigmatism simultaneously.
The Acrysof Toric IOL is a foldable, single-piece lens that is implanted during cataract surgery to replace the clouded lens. The unique design of the AcrySof Toric IOL makes it possible to reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism and significantly improve uncorrected distance vision.
Since the Acrysof Toric IOL is a monofocal lens, it will still be necessary for patients to use reading glasses for the fine print. However, distance vision will be greatly improved especially since a patient’s astigmatism will also be corrected.
During cataract or lens replacement surgery, the patient’s natural lenses can be replaced with a multifocal IOL instead of a monofocal IOL. These lenses are designed to improve near, intermediate, and far-distance vision.
Etched onto the surface of the multifocal lens are concentric rings, which allow images at a variety of distances to focus on the retina. Multifocal IOL's provide restored visual function and reduce or eliminate the need to wear corrective eyewear.
AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Lens for cataract surgery is the first and only trifocal lens of its kind available in the United States. This premium lens is designed to deliver focusing power at near, mid and far distances, reducing, and in some instances eliminating, the need for glasses, bifocals, trifocals and readers. Even if you have astigmatism! And when you can rely less on glasses, you can be free to do more, see more, and live more with greater freedom and less restriction.
At Coastal Vision, we believe in providing our patients with the very best in vision care. We are proud to offer the latest advancements in technology including the Acrysof® ReSTOR® IOL. The ReSTOR® IOL provides patients with better vision after cataract surgery and they are less dependent on their glasses. ReSTOR® is a vast improvement from the traditional mono-focal lenses which only allow patients to see clearly at one distance following cataract surgery. Cataract surgery with ReSTOR® can potentially eliminate a patient’s need for glasses or bifocals.
As we age it becomes difficult to focus at various distances and that is when glasses become necessary. The ReSTOR® lens changes the focus which allows patients to see at various distances. ReSTOR® can help cataract patients eliminate these difficulties and be able to see at a multitude of distances.
ReSTOR® IOL is considered one of the first premium lens implants to achieve a high level of success among cataract patients. Most patients have had a positive experience with the ReSTOR® and they either do not have to wear glasses anymore or only for a few small tasks. FDA data released states that 80% of patients were glasses-free following cataract surgery with ReSTOR®. Patients are provided with better vision and their eyes feel young again.
The Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL is a premium intraocular lens that is specifically designed to offer both distance and near vision. This lens is typically implanted at the time of cataract removal. It is also sometimes used during an elective refractive lens exchange procedure. The goal in choosing the Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL is to achieve less dependence on glasses or contact lenses. The Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL brings objects at varying distances into focus using a technology called diffraction. A series of rings on the entire inner surface of the Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL focuses the light from objects in our vision at varying distances. This allows for a smooth transition of focus between distant, intermediate, and near targets.
After surgery, nearly 9 out of 10 patients did not require glasses for any activity. 93.8% of bilaterally implanted patients stated that they functioned comfortably without glasses at all distances—near, intermediate, and far—at 1 year. 88% of bilaterally implanted patients reported never wearing glasses.
Most patients achieved excellent image quality at all distances, under any lighting condition.
Over 94% of study patients would choose Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL again.
